Indonesia and Malaysia have blocked all access to Grok, the AI chatbot of Elon Musk’s X after a series of indecent photos of young women were leaked online by the AI.
The public outcry against Grok AI, a function available on X (formerly known as Twitter), has only been getting stronger as countless users were found utilizing the chatbot to create deepfakes of young women in sexually compromising positions.
Meutya Viada Hafid, an Indonesian newscaster and politician, announced the ban on January 10th, stating that this measure was taken in order to “protect women, young children and citizens from the risks associated with an artificial intelligence deep faking pornographic content online”. Subsequently, Malaysia announced its own ban on January 11th, in a response to the indecent content being propagated online by the chatbot.
Both Indonesia and Malaysia are countries where the Islamic faith is predominant and where pornographic material is strictly forbidden. The UK, the EU and India have also expressed their concerns about the measures being taken in regards to Grok AI.
CNN has reached out to Elon Musk and X, the providers of Grok AI, for comments on the matter.
Musk and X had previously stated that the offender accounts had been suspended and they were working alongside law enforcement agencies and governing bodies to address this issue; nevertheless, at the present moment users are still able of generating sexual images of women and these images continue to flood the internet.
